Souls are generally considered entities outside the third-dimensional reality the real world is in. This is likely due to the proven existence of souls in the series, and their manipulation by human hands being a risk to the fabric of reality. Yet, its interference with those who have committed Human Transmutation would imply it has an interest in preserving the natural order of nature and the Universe. Truth does not promise an afterlife or salvation for devotion to its Omnipresence, Omnipotence, and Omniscience. It does not transcribe its structure of how humans should live to the masses in the same manner that real-life religions have doctrines. What is interesting in the story of Fullmetal Alchemist is that Truth is not a worshiped being. That is why when Truth comes face-to-face with an alchemist who has disregarded the laws of nature, they see themselves because Truth is them, and they are judging themselves. The very concept of a being which is the Universe and everything within the Universe simply makes no logical sense in the manner of how humans perceive reality on a third-dimensional plane. It is everything, knows everything, sees everything, but is also nothing, sees nothing, and knows nothing. Truth can be considered a separate dimensional being. Truth explains what it is to the person it encounters in a manner that the person can understand, for the reality of such would be far too complex for humanity to fully grasp. I am the truth of your despair, the inescapable price of your boastfulness.’ This statement explains the human perception of what the Truth is, which is in line with many understandings of real-life religions where God is outside the fabric of Time and Space. So, of course, this also means that I am you. Truth says, ‘Who am I? One name you might have for me is the world, or you might call me the universe, or perhaps God, or perhaps the Truth. It is where no mortal should tread but used as the method of collecting the toll for their transmutation. However, they are shown the Gate of Truth which is the conjunction of reality and contains the knowledge of the Universe. Life is not cheap and can only be paid with what is most valuable to the alchemist, to which Truth can perceive internally as Truth is also the alchemist. As Truth has no human emotions aside from what the person perceiving it envisions, it is the adequate return for the request of creating life. This may appear like a higher being dishing out punishment for the transgression of playing God, but the reasoning behind it is not as simple. For that, they lose what is most valuable to them and are offered a mimic of the human they tried to revive in return. When someone attempts Human Transmutation, they abuse the laws of nature. Whilst humans may consider Human Transmutation as taboo due to the immorality of the alchemy and the playing of God, Truth’s perception of this is expanded through the user’s morality. Truth is not an individualistic being with desires and wants, but one of the supposed duties of Truth is to maintain the scales of the equivalent exchange.
